![]() I grew up in a household where sex was far from taboo. Purity balls were in full swing, and my parents were black Christians in their mid-thirties who had just started homeschooling the year before. I Kissed Dating Goodbye was five years old. My parents gave me my purity ring when I was twelve. One hundred and fifty years later, many of those same Victorian stereotypes occupy precious space in some quarters of evangelicalism, in spite of their history of barring certain kinds of women from participating in their full expression. Her point is crystal clear: these Victorian standards of womanhood only applied to certain women in 1851. Nobody ever helps me into carriages, or over mud-puddles, or gives me any best place! And ain’t I a woman? Look at me! Look at my arm! I have ploughed and planted, and gathered into barns, and no man could head me! And ain’t I a woman? I could work as much and eat as much as a man – when I could get it – and bear the lash as well! And ain’t I a woman? I have borne thirteen children, and seen most all sold off to slavery, and when I cried out with my mother’s grief, none but Jesus heard me! And ain’t I a woman? That man over there says that women need to be helped into carriages, and lifted over ditches, and to have the best place everywhere. And Sojourner used the picture to her advantage: We all know the picture that the Victorian stereotype paints: a beautiful, virtuous woman, the pinnacle of decorum and purity. She spoke during an incredibly pivotal season in American history: the wake of the Industrial Revolution, the dying years of American chattel slavery, the birth of first wave feminism, and the height of Victorian ideology. A few months ago, my class read Ain’t I A Woman, a speech that Sojourner Truth gave at the 1851 Women’s Convention in Akron Ohio. ![]()

Bread had to be rationed for the first time late in 1946 in September 1947, the meat ration was reduced in October the bacon ration was halved and in November potatoes were rationed. So acute was the crisis that restrictions more rigorous than any in the war years became necessary. Immediately after these four months of disastrous weather there followed a period of economic crisis with an ever-increasing dollar crisis. These three months of snow and bitter cold were followed by the heaviest floods for 53 years, which did great damage, killed thousands of sheep and lambs, delayed spring sowing and threatened the prospect of a good harvest which was so urgently needed. The version reviewed is in 9mm parabellum and holds 16 rounds of ammo in its magazine. The new MCK for the Springfield Armory XD9 is here! This is the first time we have ever been able to make an MCK adjustable to 4 different barrel lengths. I won’t get into the endless debate over which round is best, but simply add I wouldn’t want to be on the receiving end of any of them. Speaking of ammo, the XD is available in three different calibers: 9mm. After countless rounds I have never encountered a failure Greedily gobbling any and all types of ammo fed to it. The weapon fires flawlessly each and every time the trigger is squeezed. I use different types of rounds for different kinds of shooting cheap steel cased rounds for target practice, and hollow points for protection. Shooting is already an expensive hobby without investing in top-shelf ammo brands. When shooters are just starting out, they don’t want to spend a ton of money on ammunition. It was impeccably accurate out of the box, achieving one inch groups at 15 yards on its first day! I thought I’d have to re-familiarize myself with the basics of shooting because I hadn’t fired a weapon in quite a while. I remember the first time I took my personal XD to the range. Thankfully, the accuracy of XD serves as a confidence booster for the newbies. For new shooters, not seeing any improvement in shot grouping because a weapon is incapable of accuracy is infuriating, and likely to make them quit. One of the most frustrating aspects of any new pursuit is lack of progress. Like the Glock, the Springfield XD features a safety trigger. This is especially good for new shooters who should avoid unnecessary gun handling in an unsafe location, especially with an unfamiliar loaded weapon. While shooters should always treat weapons as if they’re loaded, it’s nice to be able to verify that status without press-checking. Lastly, the striker status indicator protrudes from the back of the gun when a round in the pipe. Similar to a Glock or Sigma, this helps prevent the trigger from being accidentally pulled by leather or fabric when being reholstered. Unless the trigger’s center blade is fully pressed, the gun will not fire. Similar to the M1911, the XD’s safety vanishes when depressed. The foremost one is the grip safety that prevents shooters from discharging the weapon without properly grasping it. The striker-fired Springfield automatic has more than enough safety features to make even the newest of gun owners feel secure. The Springfield XD features a grip safety that prevents the weapon from being fired until it is properly held (Photo: Joshua Gillem) So what’s a gun enthusiast to do, buy a revolver, or a design that only features a trigger safety like a Glock? Manual safeties are great, but take a split second too long to disengage and are especially difficult for new shooter to remember under the stress of a life and death situation. One thing that responsible new gun owners want is a safe weapon The last thing a shooter needs is for one of their guns to fall into the hands of a child. While this seems like a rosey-tinted overview of the Croatian pistol, it still has its thorns. Several of the XD’s features make it such a forgiving weapon for new shooters it seems designed for them. Reliable and accurate out of the box, the XD ships with one of the most comfortable grips on the planet. The full size Springfield XD is a superbly machined piece of equipment and excellent choice for new pistol owners. The Springfield XD waits like Batman, ever vigilant to defend you and your loved ones. ![]() ![]() A C ship may be a tank, but an A ship is more like a fighter jet, and is going to be highly maneuverable for space combat with low weight, tight turning and high speed. Yes, those are very cool, however, it’s not necessarily the case that class B and C ships are better than A, because there are significant tradeoffs. By the time you get to C, you are seeing some massive, impressive ships. Yes, it’s a weird system.Ĭlasses B and C Aren’t Necessarily Better Than A – I know you start with class A ships, and have to upgrade to class B and C. As much as you may think deleting a ship is bad to do this, there are loads of crappy ships you can steal/hijack essentially anywhere, and that’s all you need to get started. It does not have to be the same class, as a new reaction can upgrade it to B, C whatever. There is no “start new ship” option, but you can take a ship, essentially delete literally everything about it, and start over that way. Building A Ship From Scratch – So you can do this, but not in the way you might think. I'm so ready.Īll pressure was on for the Xbox Games Showcase but Microsoft really delivered. With so many options and ship varieties to discover, I just know I'm going to lose hours upon hours shaping my very own "home among the stars". Aside from the prospect of romance with the companions, ship customization really stood out to me. The Starfield Direct definitely delivered, with so much packed in to get excited about. I think it's why the style of Starfield really speaks to me, and I can't wait to discover all of the details that make my ship hopefully feel like a home. From the unwashed dishes piled up in the sink, to the crew's little nick-nacks that decorate the ship, and the fridge door that just won't close, its homey feel seeps through every inch of the space. It's an aspect of design I appreciated about the Milano in Guardians of the Galaxy. Nothing says home to me quite like places that really look like they've been lived in, with little granular details that show wear and tear from repeated use. I love the "slightly retro and analogue touch" of the visual style, where everything, as art director Istvan Pely highlights, looks "well-used, worn, and lived-in". The Starfield Direct also shed light on the "NASA punk" aesthetic Bethesda is going for when it comes to the look and design of ships and interiors. Lived-inĪfter the Starfield Direct, I'm completely sold on Bethesda's new adventure I have every hope it will be these characters that bring our ships to life, and maybe even become our found family. Along with a roster of Starfield companions we can take with us, we can also find potential crew members to hire as we adventure to different planets. In fact, during Mass Effect 2, you get a little taste of what's it like when the crew is gone making it lose its warmth and feel downright hollow and empty in comparison. ![]() The same applies to the Normandy in Mass Effect, which would be awfully lonely and far less homey without its iconic cast and party members. Likewise, The Outer Worlds' Unreliable only begins to feel like a home once you recruit a group of misfit followers who join your team. Nothing makes the Milano in Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy, for example, feel more homely than the ragtag crew on board with you as Starlord. I've always been of the opinion that home is where your loved ones or friends are. As well as being able to shape our own spacecraft by putting our personal stamp on its appearance and layout, we'll be able to assign our own crew who will also call it home. While the likes of Mass Effect and The Outer Worlds present you with a ready-made ship that's integral to the story, Starfield is putting us in direct control of our ships in more ways than one. ![]() ![]() Like a normal beholder, each eye had a different power, namely: charm monster, charm person, disintegrate, fear, finger of death, flesh to stone, inflict moderate wounds, sleep, slow, and telekinesis.
